Special Holiday Gift for Team Development
A true story about team development
Writing and publishing 2 books twelve months apart is exhausting, exhilarating and life-changing. Every time I hear from someone who has found value in one of these books it recharges and energizes me.
My books are meant to be shared. Sure, sharing by giving your copy to someone else after you’ve finished it is one way of sharing. But what I really mean is sharing the reading experience with others while you’re reading it. My deepest hope is for coaches to experience these books side by side with their teams and staff and in doing so building stronger, deeper and more winning relationships. Winning on the floor and off.
The story I’d like to share says it all. Last summer I received a letter from Coach Wade Grinde of Minnesota that read,
Two years ago we did a team book study with Toughness by Jay Bilas. It was a successful part of our team development and we are excited to do the same with The Daily Nugget this year.
We assigned 2 chapters a week to be read and highlighted. Each week we met on Thursday nights … my assistants and I facilitated the discussions with hopes that it would lead to an open forum on how the book’s concepts related to the individuals and/or our team. What we experienced that summer was very moving.
Last summer I couldn’t find a book that I felt could follow up the Bilas book. This spring my assistant read a tweet from Jay about your book. I was excited about what I read but I was still on the fence until one night one of my graduating seniors said, ‘Coach, are you going to do another book study? That was one of the best things we did as a team.’ I contacted you the next day.”
Coach Grinde ordered 30 copies of The Daily Nugget! Yes, 30! Coach Grinde isn’t a major D1 coach with a budget. He coaches at a small high school.
In October my curiosity got the best of me. I wrote to Coach Grinde and he wrote right back:
‘The Daily Nugget’ has been and will be our season’s b-ball bible! Your book speaks my language. When we received the books I gathered the team and had the captains pass out the books based upon the ‘word’ you autographed in each book. They were responsible for matching the book with each player, as best as they could…
What I like most about the book is how quick and easy it applies to each day. It has been great for me as a coach/dad as well as for our players…
I liked the life connection to each Nugget…
My plan during the season is to use it every day. It will be the focus for each practice. The ‘Word Thought’ will be on every posted practice plan…”
A team development holiday gift for you
Every great coach is always looking for better ways to develop their team. A strong, tight team who understands each other and has each other’s backs can make all the difference in those buzzer beaters or when you’re facing stronger talent.
Sharing thoughts and ideas through common reading is one of the best ways to strengthen relationships because it builds better communication.
If you’re excited by Coach Grinde’s experience, if you can see how this relates to your players and your program, if you’ve been wondering how to bring your team together even though the season is in play, you’ll want to take advantage of my special team-building holiday book purchase invitation:
