“For all coaches out there, this book is a must-read.”
– John Calipari, Head Coach, University of Kentucky Wildcats
The Golden Whistle is for basketball coaches and every person who wants to become the best they can be!
This fable takes you on a journey into the heart of a coach’s world. You’ll meet Ted Faylor, the renowned Golden Whistle coach, who is at the pinnacle of his career; and Little K, his ambitious young student assistant, who knows he can be a great coach and is sure he has all the answers. But the novice coach has a lot to learn and he learns it all the hard way. This learning leads him to the ten Golden Nuggets, which hold the secrets to earning the Golden Whistle — success in basketball coaching and, more importantly, in life.
When you engage the teachings of the Golden Nuggets as Little K did, you’ll find that you can improve your coaching, your players, your team, and the lives of everyone around you.

Author Jim Burson talks about The Golden Whistle and why he wrote it
“There are a lot of X and O books out there – I’ve probably read all of them – so I was inspired to write something a little different. The Golden Whistle combines a good story and ten nuggets that I think can help you no matter what you do in life.”
– Coach Jim Burson, author
Coach, just finished your book, The Golden Whistle. Every coach should read this. Can’t wait to use the nuggets in my coaching.
I don’t read a whole lot, but The Golden Whistle by Jim Burson was one I had to finish! #goldennuggets #greatread
Finished this book and I strongly suggest every coach try and read it, if you want to be better. Thank you Jim Burson.
The Education of the Heart is the Heart of Education. I always recommend three ‘must-read’ books to basketball coaches serious about the profession. This book must be added to the list. ‘The Golden Whistle’ is a gift to the coaching profession.
Five Stars. Great book for all coaches of all sports!
This book is a must read for all coaches, athletes, parents, and fans of any sport. Leaders in any field could benefit. Great insight on much more than the X’s and O’s. These principles could transform not only coaching but leadership as well.
This is the Coaching Bible. If you are a coach or a person in a leadership role, this is a must read…this book has helped me get motivated and be ready for the many pitfalls that lay ahead of me in my career.
The Golden Whistle by Jim Burson is a great easy-read book that is thought provoking about coaching.
Winning coaching. My son played high school basketball while I read this book and the book helped me to be a more understanding parent. I also gained empathy for the complex plight of a coach as well as players. The Golden Whistle made me want to be a better mother, not just a better basketball mom. For me, that felt like winning coaching.
Not Just for Basketball’ers. I’m not a sports fan, but this book hits my interests, actually relates as much to Zen and the practice of conflict resolution as it does to sport. Any sport. …. A very human view of athletics, a push for compassion in lifestyle.
“Essential reading …. to produce championship results.”
– from the foreword by George Raveling, Naismith Hall of Fame, Nike Director of International Basketball
