“For all coaches out there, this book is a must-read.”
– John Calipari, Head Coach, University of Kentucky Wildcats
The Golden Whistle is for basketball coaches and every person who wants to become the best they can be!
This fable takes you on a journey into the heart of a coach’s world. You’ll meet Ted Faylor, the renowned Golden Whistle coach, who is at the pinnacle of his career; and Little K, his ambitious young student assistant, who knows he can be a great coach and is sure he has all the answers. But the novice coach has a lot to learn and he learns it all the hard way. This learning leads him to the ten Golden Nuggets, which hold the secrets to earning the Golden Whistle — success in basketball coaching and, more importantly, in life.
When you engage the teachings of the Golden Nuggets as Little K did, you’ll find that you can improve your coaching, your players, your team, and the lives of everyone around you.
“Yellow highlighters were invented for books like this. It’s the best blueprint for success I’ve seen in 35 years of searching.”

“Direction for anyone on how to become successful in their area of expertise and in life. READ IT!”
– Glenn Wilkes, National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame; Head Coach, Stetson University Men’s Basketball (retired)
Author Jim Burson talks about The Golden Whistle and why he wrote it
“There are a lot of X and O books out there – I’ve probably read all of them – so I was inspired to write something a little different. The Golden Whistle combines a good story and ten nuggets that I think can help you no matter what you do in life.”
– Coach Jim Burson, author
The Education of the Heart is the Heart of Education. I always recommend three ‘must-read’ books to basketball coaches serious about the profession. This book must be added to the list. ‘The Golden Whistle’ is a gift to the coaching profession.
I don’t read a whole lot, but The Golden Whistle by Jim Burson was one I had to finish! #goldennuggets #greatread
Thank you. #gofightswim
Great read. Must-read for players at all levels. Terrific web site for coaches, too.
Coach, just finished your book, The Golden Whistle. Every coach should read this. Can’t wait to use the nuggets in my coaching.
This book is a must read! Book of the Month. #TheGoldenWhistle #CoachingSuccess
Just finished The Golden Whistle! Great stuff, thanks!
A Great Read and an Excellent Resource Tool. I would highly recommend The Golden Whistle to individuals in any job or profession. It’s also the kind of book that can be re-read and studied over time. This book is a valuable resource tool for all, but it should be required reading for those beginning their career, whether it is coaching or not.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I’m not a basketball coach, nor a basketball player…BUT I LOVED THIS BOOK! Coach Burson includes plenty of basketball, which is interesting, but it’s merely a vehicle. The focus of this book is relationships. If you’re in a position of leadership, whether you’re a coach, teacher, sales manager, CEO, parent, or babysitter…help your people blossom. This book will absolutely inspire and guide you. Coach Burson loves his players! That comes through throughout. Great read
Outstanding! One of the best basketball coaching books I’ve read. Will def go back and read again … Would recommend to anyone in any sport.
“Essential reading …. to produce championship results.”
